After the decisive game against the Pioneras of the Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUCPR), the women’s basketball team was eliminated. In spite of that setback, Pedro González, their trainer, was very pleased with the players’ performance, since they only lost three games in the whole season. It is worthwhile to point out that the PUCPR has an outstanding trajectory. However, the most difficult game of the season, according to the trainer, was the one against the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPRRP).

Earlier in the season, the Delfinas faced: the Universidad Metropolitana (UMET), the University of Puerto Rico, Carolina, Humacao, Aguadilla, and Bayamón, and the American University (AU), among others.

According to Mari Batista, the Athletics’ Department Director, the last game of the quarterfinals with the Pioneras was “intense.” However, she upholds that the women’s team was worthy of their accomplishments, since they classified in the post season and the quarterfinals.

We may have lost in scoring but we won in many other ways. The ladies did not give up and I am very proud of the team. If anyone is more heartedly enthusiastic than anything, it’s me,” Batista conveyed.

“Throughout this season, we discovered amazing ladies, an excellent team, from the Presidency, the Athletics Department, my staff, the trainer, the girls, who are extraordinary human beings, not only on the game floor, but socially and academically,” González commented.

This is the first time that the trainer coached a women’s team and confirms that it was memorable, they had more disposition and commitment than other teams he had had under his charge.

The Delfinas improved greatly throughout the season, since there were defense and other problems at the beginning. Later on, they became more confident, they connected and gave it their all.

The outstanding players of the season, according to an analysis by the Un solo latir sagradeño (USLS) were: Ailin González, Player #7, Ninoshka Febles, Player #19, and Dalimar Cedeño, Player #6.

The Director, personally, wanted to thank three students who finished the season and that “were part of the heart of the team:” Kalerie Ortíz, Abigail De la Cruz, and Yamariam Maldonado, and the trainer for taking on the challenge.

The Sagrado Women’s team achieved more than they could have imagined: they united the students, faculty, leaders and members of student associations, who came to the basketball court and supported their team to the “bam bam” rhythm.

In looking forward to the next season, they expect a more mature team and confirm that they were very good at recruiting, and, that next year, they will be even more successful!
