These young artists, under the guidance of Professor Marilyn Torrech, explored and captured Puerto Rican culture\u2019s African heritage in their works.<\/p>\n<p>Through the <em>AfroPresencia, AfroPasillo <\/em>and<em> Hablando puertorrique\u00f1o <\/em>installations, the students used different techniques to offer a profound and different look at Afro-Caribbean people, local illustrious persons, and elements of Puerto Rican lingo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13134\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13134 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1-768x815.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Afro-3-1-965x1024.jpg 965w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These installations were developed with the purpose of announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/congresoafropr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Segundo Congreso de Afrodescendencia en Puerto Rico<\/a> (Second Congress on African Heritage in Puerto Rico) to our campus community. The congress seeks to celebrate the legacy of our African ancestors and to fight prejudice and discrimination.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMy work called <\/em>Extraterrestre<em> has the purpose of educating and demonstrating that we are all equal. I\u2019m very happy to have worked on this project because we used different processes, but most importantly, because we could use our work to educate,\u201d said Juliana Col\u00f3n, visual arts student.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13132 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afr0-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The works took approximately three weeks to prepare and incorporated different materials, such as chalk, acrylics, diluted acrylics, pastels, colored glue, watercolor crayons, colored pencils, digitized elements, and mobile applications, among others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn this project, we had the opportunity to work with the batik Indian and African fabric technique taught to us by Prof. Torrech. She used a combination of elements that not only highlight our African heritage, but also the emotions evoked by what it means to be Puerto Rican.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI love the song <\/em>Preciosa<em> by Rafael Hern\u00e1ndez and the part where it mentions the noble countryman (\u2018el noble jibarito\u2019). Hence, the title of my work. One of the elements I wanted to highlight the most was the combination of colors and details that we see in African culture,\u201d the student said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13140 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-6-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Gracemar Ol\u00e1n highlights black women in Puerto Rican culture. \u201cI chose Nilita Vient\u00f3s Gast\u00f3n given the strength and courage she showed when it came to breaking barriers. She was the first female lawyer to work in the Puerto Rico Department of Justice and I wanted to portray her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As expressed by Professor Marilyn Torrech, coordinator of the installations and lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Department of Humanistic and Social Studies (FIEHS, Spanish acronym), this kind of activity gives students a chance to develop different skills, including the ability to innovate and to show their work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13138 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/afro-5-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy with the results. The students have been very committed to their projects and took on the challenge. This kind of initiative is very important because, in the art world, they will face all kinds of scenarios. <strong>They will have to reinvent themselves, innovate, make proposals, think of the spaces and, above all, diversify and explore different options that make a difference creatively<\/strong>,\u201d the professor said.<\/p>\n<p>The installations are currently in the library.
