The activity was part of the course <em>\u201cIdentities in the Spanish-speaking World,\u201d<\/em> which combines the study of cultural identities with immersive linguistic experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe greatly admire Mara Pastor\u2019s work, and the idea for the workshop emerged from that shared admiration,\u201d explained Fernando Acosta Rodr\u00edguez, Librarian for Latin American Studies at Princeton. \u201cHaving Princeton students come to a university in Puerto Rico, sit at the same table, and share with local students is an incredibly valuable experience,\u201d added Acosta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header--1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44621\" style=\"width:620px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header--1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header--300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header--768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header--1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/inSagrado-Header-.jpg 1642w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fernando Acosta Rodr\u00edguez, Librarian for Latin American, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latino Studies at Princeton University, with students from Sagrado and Princeton.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professors Pedro Meira Monteiro and Amina Shabani, who teach the course, highlighted how the experience offered new perspectives on teaching and learning literature, while students engaged in creativity and critical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the day, students from both universities shared readings, analyses, and original poems, exploring how poetry can both affirm and challenge cultural narratives. The interaction between our students and those from Sagrado leaves a lasting mark,\u201d said Dr. Pedro Meira Monteiro. \u201cPoetry plays a crucial role in studying identity. What happened here, this dialogue between affirmation and critique, is truly powerful,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Dr. Amina Shabani, co-professor of the course, it was her first visit to Puerto Rico and an opportunity to observe new ways of teaching literature.\u201cWe were inspired by how poetry is taught here. The informal conversations with students gave us ideas for future courses and reaffirmed poetry\u2019s role in society. Seeing students read their poems and celebrate their creative efforts was deeply moving,\u201d shared Dr. Shabani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day concluded with a collective reading of the poems created during the workshop, where students shared their work with their peers.
