As part of the commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the iconic portico at Universidad del Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n, the institution recently selected the winning design for its 2026\u20132027 commemorative T-shirt contest. The winning entry was created by student Viviana I. B\u00e1ez Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e1ez Rico is preparing to begin her fourth year as a Design student with a minor concentration in Music at the School of Arts, Design, and Creative Industries (EADIC, per its acronym in Spanish). She describes her artistic style as a blend of Art Nouveau<\/em> and Art Deco<\/em> influences, both known for their richly detailed and visually expressive designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her commemorative artwork pays tribute to the laying of the cornerstone of the Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n Building and incorporates the campus\u2019s historic architecture with Art Deco<\/em> elements, a style renowned for its boldness and extravagance during the 1920s. Drawing from this concept and the color palette provided for the competition, B\u00e1ez Rico experimented with angled compositions and found inspiration in video games whose worlds evoke Art Deco<\/em> aesthetics through their posters and architecture. She also incorporated rays of light emanating from behind the building, along with symbols of the university community such as dolphins, crosses, and the Sacred Heart, which occupies the center of the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the student, the design reflects the early stages of the Sagrado’s educational project in Puerto Rico, something she attempts to symbolize through the light shining from behind the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u00e1ez Rico has been an active artist at Sagrado. Her work was previously selected for the 2025 Christmas greeting card<\/a>, where she used the Art Nouveau<\/em> style to depict the Nativity of Jesus at Sagrado\u2019s iconic portico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funds raised through T-shirt sales will benefit the Scholarship Program<\/a>, which supports more than 200 Sagrado students each year.
