During a talk at The Summ college fair for pre-college student counselors, Figueroa discussed some of the characteristics that distinguish these young people and how they may influence the way they receive guidance when making decisions about their future.

For Figueroa Narváez, recognizing generational differences allows counselors to be more attentive to students’ needs without assuming that all students respond in the same way. Among other characteristics, Generation Z is made up of digital natives and self-directed learners who are exposed to large amounts of information. In the case of Generation Alpha, which includes students in 11th grade and below, their relationship with technology begins even earlier: they are young people who have never known a world without digital media.

This context also changes the role of counselors. The challenge is not simply to provide information, but to help students interpret it, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions. With this in mind, Figueroa Narváez summarized this approach in five recommendations:

1. “Less information, more conversation.”
Students can find a great deal of information about universities, programs, and careers on their own. The value of guidance lies in helping them interpret it so they can turn it into decisions.

2. Help them discover what they want to become.
Rather than beginning by asking what career they want to pursue, Figueroa Narváez proposes exploring other questions, such as: What are you passionate about? What problems do you want to solve? What impact do you want to have? The goal is to broaden the conversation beyond simply naming a profession.

3. “Make them protagonists, not spectators.”
Guidance can become a discovery experience. Counselors can motivate and equip students to research, compare, and explore the options they identify for themselves.

4. Teach them to filter, not just to search.
Having access to more information also presents a challenge: knowing how to distinguish reliable information from content shaped by advertising, trends, and digital algorithms. Figueroa identified this as a key skill for young people who have become accustomed to receiving personalized content.

5. “Let’s talk about the future without expecting them to have their lives figured out at 17.”
Choosing a university or career does not have to be viewed as a decision set in stone, particularly in a professional landscape shaped by continuous change and the impact of artificial intelligence. Guidance should also prepare students to adapt and retrain throughout their professional lives.

At Sagrado, this perspective is reflected in an educational approach that seeks to prepare students to respond to the changes shaping the professional world, including those driven by technological advances and artificial intelligence. Rather than steering them toward a rigid definition of a profession, the goal is to equip them with the tools to identify opportunities, make informed decisions, and adapt to the changes they will encounter throughout their professional lives.

Sagrado’s Executive Director of Admissions spoke with counselors about the characteristics that distinguish the generations preparing to enter college.
