Together they succeeded.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crean v\u00ednculo de hermandad por un 5K\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W36ARRKrI2s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>By Nicole Ortiz Marrero<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journalism Student<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably seen them together walking around campus: Juan Jos\u00e9 Barrag\u00e1n with his crutches, charismatic and always smiling to greet his peers; not too far you\u2019ll see Luis Enrique Fern\u00e1ndez, the \u201cbrother\u201d that assured him that \u201ceverything is possible\u201d and promised to accompany him in this challenging adventure. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Spending time with them is a unique experience. Through their bond, they convey the true meaning of companionship, brotherhood and, above all, hope. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juanjo, as he is affectionately known, longed to participate in his first five kilometer race, however accepting the task pose a challenge given his situation. <\/span><b>His condition, cerebral palsy, affects the mobility in his arms and legs, so beyond his commitment and enthusiasm, when carrying out any training these factors would have to be considered.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6872\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6872 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5kII.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5kII.jpg 800w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5kII-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/insagrado.sagrado.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/5kII-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luis Enrique and Juanjo during one of their trainings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, a year after their first encounter, Luis Enrique remembers how everything began when he decided to help Juanjo, a Public Relations freshman, correct his feet while using the stationary bike in the gym in Sagrado. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first there was no intention at all. I\u2019m just a person that likes to help, I saw that he needed assistance, he was eager to exercise and that caught my attention. Over time I noticed that he was coming consistently, we talked, and he mentioned his goal of competing in a 5K\u201d, said Luis Enrique, an Exercise Sciences senior. \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty was no obstacle for these two dolphins.<strong> Despite the challenges posed by training Juanjo, Luis Enrique ventured to learn more about him and his condition.<\/strong> He read books, consulted with specialists and his Exercise Sciences professor with the aim of creating a plan tailored to him. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since I didn\u2019t know the condition well, I stopped, went to visit Professor Soler and I educated myself. We didn\u2019t want to risk any type of injury. We wanted to do this the right way\u201d, said Luis Enrique. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For two weeks, under <\/span><b>Professor Reynaldo Soler of the Exercise Sciences Program\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tutelage, they designed a training plan for Juanjo, aimed specifically to strengthen his lower extremities. With the professor\u2019s aid, they determined what worked and what didn\u2019t, and began preparing to meet their goal. It was common to find them always at the same hour, committed, working out in the gym. Generally, two times a week, sometimes more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Their transformation wasn\u2019t limited to the professional field, both have also grown personally<\/strong>: Juanjo has changed his eating habits and says that he learned to \u201ctake care and respect himself\u201d with his friend\u2019s influence. While in Luis Enrique\u2019s case this experience has meant a great deal of growth for him and assures that he learned to \u201cnever give up and face life\u2019s challenges with great impetus\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always around the same time, two or three times a week, faithfully. You would see them walking around the campus and afterwards head to the gym. They didn\u2019t fail each other, it was something with a lot of commitment\u201d, said the professor, who teaches the courses of Exercise Physiology, Cardiorespiratory Conditioning and mentors the Professional Practice.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>The awaited day arrived, the \u201cRun, Walk, or Roll It 5K\u201d and both attended. <\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beginning (Juanjo) was a little excited but then everything flowed rather well. He ran the race on his own, nobody helped him. I was so proud\u201d, said Luis Enrique. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an hour and twenty minutes, they reached the finish line and, together, now plan their next goal: to lower their time, creating an independence from the crutch for Juanjo and simultaneously continue strengthening their friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juanjo\u2019s trial became the common goal where their brotherhood flourished. Now they share many other things: they go to the movies, enroll in the same courses and normally you can find them joking around. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly he\u2019s like my brother.
