A más de un mes del impacto del huracán María por Puerto Rico el fenómeno atmosférico ha abierto las puertas para demostrar la fortaleza, solidaridad y hermandad que nos unen como pueblo.

Al igual que todos los puertorriqueños el pasado 20 de septiembre se convirtió en un día que jamás podrá olvidarse. Y es que a eso de las 6:00 de la mañana entró a Puerto Rico el huracán María. Este ciclón, el más poderoso y destructivo de la historia moderna del país, transformó el espíritu de los puertorriqueños.
Los nuevos retos que ha dejado este huracán han promovido que los ciudadanos se unan y ayuden unos a los otros. Espacios como el Centro de Solidaridad de Sagrado Contigo han enfocado sus esfuerzos en el proceso de sanación y reconstrucción de un nuevo futuro.
Según comenta Edwin Figueroa, coordinador de Proyectos Pastorales, el Centro de Solidaridad no solo provee agua y artículos de primera necesidad, sino que brinda esperanza, acogida y amor tanto a los estudiantes y empleados como a las comunidades cercanas a la insitución.
Queremos brindar sanación, abrir las puertas a ese proceso de catarsis tan importante para seguir adelante. Queremos abrazarlos a todos porque todos son importantes. Por eso, si me preguntas qué historias me han impactado podría decirte que no puedo escoger solo una. Tanto el joven que llega en bicicleta bajo el intenso calor a buscar agua como aquellos que han perdido sus hogares o trabajos, o los jóvenes que repentinamente, luego del huracán, se han convertido en jefes de familia, todos dejan huellas en nosotros”, expresó Figueroa.
La labor que se realiza en el Centro y los esfuerzos de Sagrado Contigo, que hasta el momento cuentan con 316 voluntarios y han impactado más de 5,000 familias, ha convertidon a Sagrado en un espacio en dónde las personas pueden encontrar un lugar que les provee herramientas para continuar.
“Esta experiencia nos ha dado una lección de vida increíble. Nos ha enseñado que si ponemos empeño, estamos dispuestos a adaptarnos y nos ayudamos podemos convertir los obstáculos en oportunidades de crecimiento. María nos ha enseñado que nosotros, los puertorriqueños somos nuestros propios superhéroes”, concluyó.

More than a month after the impact of hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico, doors have opened to show the strength, solidarity, and fraternity that unites us as people.

For every Puerto Rican, the past September 20th became a day that will never be forgotten. At 6 a.m. Hurricane Maria entered along our coasts and became the most powerful and destructive hurricane in our modern history. But it also transformed the Puerto Rican spirit.
The challenges that have risen since Maria’s passing have promoted that citizens come together to help one another. Spaces like the Solidarity Hub of Sagrado With You have focused their efforts on healing and rebuilding a new future.
According to Edwin Figueroa, coordinator of Pastoral Ministry Projects, the Solidarity Hub doesn’t only provide water and first necessities, it also brings hope, acceptance, and love to students, employees, and the neighboring communities.
We want to provide healing, open the doors to this catharsis process that’s so important. We want to hug them because every one of them is important. That’s why, if you ask me what stories have impressed me the most, I can’t just pick one. Both the young man that arrives in a bicycle in the blazing heat to get some water for his family, and those who have lost their home, or the young people, who after the hurricane, have found themselves as family heads, all of them leave their footprint here”, said Figueroa.
The efforts by the Hub and Sagrado with you, that count with 316 volunteers and have reached over 5 thousand families, have helped Sagrado become a place where people find the necessary resources to move on.
“This experience has given us an incredible life lesson. It has taught us that if we dare to endeavor, we’re willing to adapt and help each other we can turn obstacles into growing opportunities. Maria has taught us Puerto Ricans that we are own superheroes”, he concluded.
