Today, April 10, 2026, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón commemorates 146 years of history, faith, and commitment to its educational mission, solidifying its position as the oldest educational project in Puerto Rico.
As part of this celebration, a commemorative Mass was held, during which President Gilberto J. Marxuach Torrós announced the institutionalization of April 10 as an official day of celebration at the University. This date will be incorporated into the institutional calendar, alongside other solemn observances that honor the University’s history and its foundational figures, such as Saint Magdalena Sofía Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
Since the arrival in Puerto Rico of the first Religious of the Society of the Sacred Heart, guided by the work initiated by Saint Magdalena Sofía Barat in France, the institution has served as a space for integral formation, centered on the intellectual, human, and spiritual development of generations of students. For more than a century, Sagrado has cultivated an academic tradition rooted in ethical and Christian values, forming citizens committed to their communities and to the common good. Today, that legacy is not only honored but also projected decisively into the future.

In keeping with this legacy, the Sagrado community expressed its commitment to an innovative and global Sagrado, inspired by Christian values and academic excellence. This commitment reaffirms the path toward an internationally engaged institution, cutting-edge graduate education, and institutional sustainability, guided by an active faith expressed through service.
As part of the commemoration, members of the University community who participated in the spiritual workshops offered by Centro Sofía were also recognized, an initiative that promotes Sagrado’s history, mission, and values.

Guided by its Strategic Plan 2030, the University affirms its vision for the future through five objectives that outline its growth and transformation: strengthening the academic and student experience; consolidating its position as a global university; ensuring institutional growth and sustainability; developing a platform of innovative graduate and professional studies; and reinforcing institutional identity and sense of belonging by promoting Sagrado’s history, mission, and Christian and Catholic values.
In this new chapter, Sagrado remains true to its essence: the formation of well-rounded professionals committed to service, innovation, and social justice. As it approaches its 150th anniversary, the University moves forward with clarity and purpose, honoring its roots while shaping its future.
