The program is done in partnership with the Google News Initiative.

Four journalism students from Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (Sagrado) were selected to participate in the Journalism Growth Lab, an initiative led by the Overseas Press Club of Puerto Rico (OPC) in partnership with the Google News Initiative, aimed at training professionals in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism.
The program, which began on July 16, will continue over the coming weeks with virtual sessions where 25 OPC members will learn about advanced AI tools that can transform aspects of journalists’ daily work, according to the organization’s announcement.
Meet the Sagrado students who will be taking part in this program!

Diego Pagán Mercado
About to begin his second year at Sagrado, Diego is a reporter for STV Noticias and La Península magazine, which is part of the EntreMedios co-curricular project within the Journalism program at the Ferré Rangel School of Communication.
Amanda Torres
Amanda is about to begin her third year as a Strategic Communications major. She is a journalist at STV Noticias and a recipient of the B. Fernández & Hnos. Scholarship.

Nadiel Morales
Nadiel is a journalist at STV Noticias, the 2026–27 vice president of the Sagrado chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), and a mentor in Sagrado’s Institutional Scholarship Program. He will begin his senior year at Sagrado in August.
Sharianette Rodríguez
Sharianette will begin her third year as a Journalism major in August and is a member of the Sagrado chapter of NAHJ.

These students will share this opportunity with other OPC members who are already established in the field of journalism and who are even Sagrado alumni. The program will be led by editor and investigative journalist Mago Torres, who is also a trainer for the Google News Initiative.
The participation of these four students is an example of how the student community lives out their Sagrado experience: by seeking opportunities for growth that extend beyond the classroom and through active learning via immersive experiences.
