Sagrado Corazón University announced on Tuesday an alliance with Telemundo Puerto Rico through the Telemundo Local Academy, a program that will prepare university students majoring in journalism.

Dialma Santiago, vice president of news, and Gilberto Marxuach-Torrós, Sagrado’s president, disclosed the agreement at a conference together with Gabriel Paizy, director of the Ferré Rangel School of Communication (ECFR, Spanish acronym), and Cassandra Vega, Sagrado Careers senior manager.

“This alliance between Telemundo Puerto Rico and Sagrado Corazón University will greatly benefit our ECFR students, since it will turn them into complete communicators, fluent in Spanish and English. They will have all the tools to be successful in such a changing and competitive industry.”

Giberto Marxuach-Torrós,
Sagrados’s president

As for Paizy, he explained that “the agreement is based on developing a series of workshops in Sagrado, starting next semester, for students majoring in Audiovisual Production, Journalism, and minoring in News Production for Radio and Television, who are in their last year of studies, in order to train them for eventual recruitment at the 31 stations of the Telemundo network in the United States. These boot camp-style workshops will be offered twice a semester to groups of 8 to 12 students.”

Meanwhile, Santiago said that “Telemundo Local Academy is an exceptional program that will enable university students at the local level to obtain the personalized training they need to begin their careers.”

“At Telemundo Puerto Rico, we are excited to meet the 2022 promotion of the Telemundo Local Academy, and to provide them with everything they need to help them reach their maximum professional potential,” the Sagrado alumna added.

The program provides training in 4 areas of study: digital media, writing and multimedia, production, and on-air presentation, as well as professional development. Telemundo and NBC journalists and leaders will be in charge of this task.

Telemundo Local Academy was initially instituted at the University of Florida and the University of Texas at Arlington. Today, about 40 students have participated and 50% have obtained employment at Telemundo/NBC.

Sagrado students interested in the Telemundo Local Academy must complete the application for admission, starting next semester, through our Center for Professional Experiences, Sagrado Careers. For more information, write to careers@sagrado.edu.
